Dental Implants

The gold standard for permanent tooth replacement — a complete tooth, root to crown.

A dental implant is a titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone, acting as an artificial tooth root. It is then topped with a custom porcelain crown to create a restoration that looks, feels, and functions just like a natural tooth — permanently. At Macleod Dental, we guide you through every step with complete transparency.

What Exactly Is a Dental Implant?

An implant has three components: a titanium post that fuses to the jawbone, an abutment connector, and a porcelain crown on top. Together they replicate the full structure of a natural tooth — including the root — preventing bone loss and preserving your facial structure over time.

Dental Implant

The Implant Post

A small titanium screw placed into the jawbone. Over 3–6 months it fuses with the bone (osseointegration), creating a permanent, stable foundation.

The Abutment

A small connector piece that attaches to the top of the implant post, providing the anchor point for the final crown.

The Crown

A custom porcelain crown fitted over the abutment — shade-matched to your surrounding teeth for a completely natural result.

Is an Implant Right for You?

You might be a good candidate if you...

Are missing one or more teeth

Implants replace single teeth, multiple teeth, or can support full-arch restorations.

Have sufficient jawbone density

Adequate bone is needed to support the implant post. Bone grafting may be an option if density is insufficient.

Have healthy gums and good oral health

Active gum disease must be treated before implant placement to ensure long-term success.

Want a permanent, non-removable solution

Unlike dentures or bridges, implants are fixed permanently and require no special removal or adhesives.

Not sure if implants are right for you? We will assess your suitability honestly and discuss all options at your consultation.

Why implants outperform other options

The only replacement that preserves jawbone and prevents bone resorption

Does not require grinding down adjacent healthy teeth (unlike a bridge)

Maintained exactly like a natural tooth — brush, floss, done

Can last 20+ years or a lifetime with proper care

Most natural look, feel, and bite force of any tooth replacement

While implants require surgery and a longer treatment timeline, most patients consider the result well worth it.

Your Implant Journey — Step by Step

Implant treatment takes place over several months to allow for proper healing. Here’s what to expect at every stage.

Step 01

Consultation & Planning

X-rays, 3D scans, and a full assessment to confirm suitability and plan the precise implant position.

Step 02

Implant Placement

Under local anaesthetic, the titanium post is placed into the jawbone in a straightforward surgical procedure.

Step 03

Osseointegration

Over 3–6 months, the implant fuses with the bone — creating a permanent, load-bearing anchor.

Step 04

Abutment & Impressions

The abutment is attached and impressions taken so your custom porcelain crown can be crafted in the lab.

Step 05

Crown Placement

Your custom porcelain crown is fitted and adjusted. You leave with a complete, permanent, natural-looking tooth.

Implants vs Your Other Options

There is no single best solution for a missing tooth — the right choice depends on your bone health, budget, and goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is getting a dental implant painful?

Implant placement is performed under local anaesthetic, so you should feel no pain during the procedure. Some soreness and swelling in the days following is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the experience is.

The full process typically takes 6–9 months from placement to final crown, as the implant needs 3–6 months to integrate with the bone. The active treatment appointments are few; most of the time is simply waiting for healing. We will give you a clear timeline at your consultation.

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, dental implants can last 20 years or more — and many last a lifetime. The porcelain crown on top may need replacement after 15–20 years, but the titanium post itself is designed to be permanent.

Age alone is not a barrier to implants. Suitability is determined by overall health, bone density, and gum health — not age. Many patients in their 70s and 80s successfully receive implants. We will assess your individual situation at your consultation.

Some private health fund extras policies provide a benefit towards implants under major dental. The amount varies considerably by fund and level of cover. We recommend checking with your insurer, and we are happy to provide a written treatment plan so you can obtain a pre-treatment estimate.

Without a tooth root to stimulate it, the jawbone begins to resorb (shrink) within months of losing a tooth. Adjacent teeth drift into the gap, affecting your bite. Chewing function deteriorates and facial appearance can change over time. Early replacement almost always results in a simpler, less costly outcome.
