Modern dentures are designed for comfort. There is an adjustment period of a few weeks as your mouth adapts, but well-fitted dentures should not cause ongoing pain. Any persistent sore spots can be addressed with minor adjustments at a follow-up appointment.
With good care, dentures typically last 5–10 years before they need replacing. As your jaw shape changes over time, the fit will also change — regular reviews allow us to reline or replace your dentures as needed to maintain comfort and function.
Dentures should be removed and cleaned daily with a soft brush and denture cleaner (not toothpaste, which can scratch the surface). They should be stored in water or a denture solution overnight. We will provide full care instructions when your dentures are fitted.
Most private health fund extras policies provide a benefit towards dentures under major dental. The amount varies by fund and level of cover. We recommend checking with your insurer and we can provide a written estimate before you proceed so you know your out-of-pocket costs.
It takes most patients 2–4 weeks to adapt fully to new dentures. Speech may sound slightly different at first and eating certain foods takes practice. Most patients find the adjustment easier than expected, and we are available for any follow-up adjustments needed during this period.
